This listing is for World of Maths NSW only - You will need to contact World of Maths Head office in QLD for all other Australian states.
What is World of Maths? Its a presentation of fun and educational, hands-on, problem solving activities that will come to your school for student participation.
The activities cover all aspects of problem solving - some are easy and some difficult. The pupils work in teams of 3 or 4, working together to solve the problems, completing a worksheet that each pupil is given.
There are activities belonging to the strands of: number, space, measurement, chance and data and logical thinking and sequencing. All activities meet the national curriculum requirements.
It is designed so that the students can’t complete all of the activities set up for each session. The incursion is normally held in a Hall or Library, with the activities placed on trestles/tables around the perimeter of the area.
At the end of each session we go through some answers and strategies, and some brain teasers. During each session we walking around helping out if asked, giving them clues as to how to think through the problems.
Teachers must be present of course, to help with supervision.
Sessions are normally of about 50/60 pupils. Sessions for Kindy to Year 3 run for 70 minutes each, and for Years 4 to 6 and 7 to 10 they go for 90 minutes each. We design a session timetable around the school’s bell times so that there is as little disruption to normalcy as possible.
