Meaning “welcome” in the Ashanti language from Ghana, Akwaaba's vision is to use traditional African drumming and dance as a tool to promote peace and unity within the West Australian community.
Led by Paul Osei Kofi, Akwaaba has been entertaining a wide variety of audiences for over 15 years with their energetic, powerful and interactive performances and workshops.
Akwaaba's school incursions and workshops offer students and staff a unique experience listening to and playing traditional, hand carved drums and percussion instruments from Africa. Paul also incorporates singing and movement into the workshops. By exposing students to the musical traditions of West Africa and the role music plays within the African culture we hope to promote a sense of unity and understanding within our multicultural society.
